Howe Sound School District's "Dark Schools" Strategy
everal years ago School District No 48
(Howe Sound) calculated that after hours vandalism was costing the
district approximately $75,000 a year. This figure did not include
indirect costs. The district implemented a "dark schools" strategy
December 1, 2003. Since the strategy was implemented, there has been a
decrease in vandalism and a savings in energy costs.
An information sheet prepared by the International Dark-Sky Association
summarizes the experience of several US schools districts that have
implemented a similar program. To view the information sheet click here.
